With the diversified development of media, more schools and educational institutions adopt digital multimedia teaching. The purpose of this teaching method is to keep up with the times, and digital media teaching can give students a clearer visual presentation. For example, the professor will use the projection presentation in class.
However, today we will focus on non-digital multimedia teaching. Different from many multimedia teaching methods in this era, there was a music class in my senior high school which made me very impressive. In that class, our professor was trying to focus more on our audio and visual experiences instead of just convey information to us through digital multimedia technology. She always let us sit on the lawn outside the classroom and play album using a song recorder, and what we have to do is to write down feelings about the songs. I consider this is such an engaging moment because the teaching method and classroom form are very novel, this will enhance students’ interests of learning in a huge degree. Furthermore, from a psychology-multisensory point of view, this class allows students to be fully engaged in the class rather than memorizing in a very abstract way as before. The natural environment can bring students smell, hearing, and vision completely different from the normal class from. Which all made this course very special, I’m sure the students would be able to write down more feelings than they would in usual classes.
So if we talk about the advantages of non-digital teaching, I think it can bring more different feelings to students in multiple dimensions, so that they can better understand the purpose of learning and the key points of the content.

Hi, Kaining. My thinking after reading your post is a very attractive teaching mode, which can bring students different learning feelings. Because of this kind of teaching, students will be more interested in learning, they will think that learning is not so boring. As you said, when you have a music class, the digital multimedia teaching you teach makes me very interested. It will make students very interested in what they learn. Through outdoor classes, students can better feel the power of music in a relaxed atmosphere. In my opinion, this kind of teaching mode should be implemented all over the world, so that more students can experience this kind of different learning fun.

I once met a literature instructor whose teaching method is similar to your music professor. He asked us to read a passage and then asked us the feelings we were aroused by it. I think this is a teaching method only suitable for art appreciation. Art arouse our senses and subconscious thoughts and feelings. When we hear a piece of music or read a piece of literature, we can empathize with it. This kind of teaching method can well mobilize our artistic perception and improve the ability of divergent thinking. However, this kind of method is not suitable for some objective and rational subjects, such as mathematics or physics. Of course, I’m not saying that there is no artistry in science, but in teaching, these subjects are more suitable for the direct input of knowledge and pay more attention to problem-solving ability.

Super interesting. I look forward to the end of this pandemic when being out in a group is allowed. Dual Coding theory will work well in that example.

Hi Kaining,
I am interested in your post because you talk of non-digital multimedia teaching methods. The post starts by introducing multimedia teaching, but goes further to explain a non-digital media teaching. This is a useful method of teaching because it uses cognitive teaching theories. Your professor plays a song using a song recorder, while you write down your feelings. This post is appropriate to multimedia studies because it captures the essence of this class. Nonetheless, I believe that you could mention the learning theories that your professor is using while trying out this non-digital approach.
